Shields Health Solutions Honors Kate Smullen for Earning One of Only 86 Certified Specialty Pharmacist Designations Awarded in 2017

August 8, 2017 – Quincy, MA – Shields Health Solutions, a creator and growth accelerator of hospital-owned specialty pharmacies nationwide, congratulates Kate Smullen, PharmD, Senior Manager of Clinical Services, on earning the coveted Certified Specialty Pharmacist (CSPTM) distinction. Ms. Smullen joins an exclusive group of only 86 Certified Specialty Pharmacists awarded nationally in 2017.

The CSP™ credential validates a pharmacist’s expertise in specialty pharmaceuticals, which are used to treat complex chronic illnesses. Certification requires experience: a minimum of 3,000 hours of specialty pharmacy practice, education: 30 hours of Specialty Pharmacy ACPE approved CEs and expertise: validating advanced proficiency passing a comprehensive examination. The certification is presented by the Specialty Pharmacy Certification Board (SPCB).

Certification examinations are based on scientific analysis of job tasks and pharmacological knowledge and are developed by testing experts, known as psychometricians, working with a broad array of subject matter experts. The SPCB Board has the sole and exclusive authority for the CSP certification program and is dedicated to promote the specialty pharmacists responsibility in maintaining the highest possible quality standards to advance ethical practice and to advocate for professional development to ensure that patients served receive safe, efficient care now and in the future.

“Earning a CSP involves the most challenging, rigorous set of testing and validation for specialty pharmacy,” said Brian S. Smith, PharmD, Vice President of Clinical Services. “Kate’s ability to serve patients with complex chronic conditions is certainly among the best in the nation. We are delighted for her and appreciate her leadership and the patient centered approach she brings to all of the patients treated at our hospital-partner specialty pharmacies.”

A graduate of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Kate joined Shields Health Solutions in 2015 as a pharmacy manager.
